A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER
When I arrived at the University of Florida as a first-generation Latina from Cuba, UF changed my life. It gave me access, confidence, community, and the courage to dream bigger. But I also remember feeling like my pride as a Gator and my pride as a Latina didn’t always have one place to come together.
Years later, during the pandemic, I asked myself,
¿Y ahora qué? The answer became Gators Unidos, created with one clear mission: to connect one generation of Latino Gators to the next. Not just through scholarships, but through mentorship, professional development, and the kind of community that reminds students: you belong here, your dreams matter, and Si Se Puede.
What started as an idea has grown into a movement. Together, we’ve awarded 10 professional development scholarships totaling $25,000, created dozens of career-building experiences, grown our leadership team from 4 to 13, deepened our partnership with the UF Hispanic Alumni Association, and launched the first-ever bilingual Latino Gator merchandise line — giving our community something they can wear proudly.
But the real impact is in the ripple effects: the scholar who lands their first opportunity, the alum who feels seen, and the next generation who knows they are not alone. This is the comunidad of my dreams — and we’re just getting started. From me to you, thank you for playing a part in our mission. Vamos pa’lante, siempre.
